Pilates is an integrated system of exercises for the body and mind, developed by the movement pioneer Joseph Pilates (1880-1967). Pilates had a number of key insights about how the body moves. He argued that the muscles of the core or powerhouse, play a critical role in stabilizing the spine, and that effective movement flows from a strong core. He also believed that concentrating strongly on the details of movement while performing an exercise is crucial in order to achieve good movement. These beliefs have been supported by recent academic research in physiology and neurology.
We find that for new clients beginning Pilates, the work is often mentally exhausting. There are so many things to think about, engaging the core, aligning the pelvis, lengthening the spine, and breathing, breathing, breathing! In order to complement and reinforce what you are learning in Pilates sessions with your teacher, we have put together a series of brief articles about a number of Pilates topics. Enjoy!
